During a joint space mission, an American astronaut proudly showed his Soviet counterpart a pen and said that American researchers had spent a lot of time and energy developing this special pen, which worked in zero gravity. When asked what they did for their pens to work in zero gravity, the Russian simply held out a lead pencil.
And the point here is that the leading edge of innovation need not be the bleeding edge.
Look for simpler ways to do things. Or see what else already exists that can be adapted for different uses. You might be surprised how much easier it makes things.

A lady once shared that she was a learning junkie. When asked to share the top 5 things she had learnt that year, and which of them helped her do her current job better and which ones prepare her for the future (next higher) level, she was surprised that all four were about her current job.
This is an easy enough mistake to make. While it is important to learn things that help us do our jobs better, remember that its equally important to constantly acquire new skills that help propel our career forward.
Ensure you have the right balance between your job and your career. At all times you must be preparing yourself to function one-up.
