October 2026 F.I.R.S.T. Newsletter – Everyone Agrees. So Why Is Nothing Changing?

Happy October!

To support you in being F.I.R.S.T. (Future-Ready. Innovative. Relevant. Strategic. Trusted.), here’s 1 tip and 1 quote.

The F.I.R.S.T. Tip

Have you ever left a meeting thinking, Everyone is on board. Then two weeks later, nothing has changed.People are still doing things the old way. The same issues keep coming up, and you’re wondering what happened to all that enthusiasm.

Sound familiar?

This happens more often than we realise.Have you ever left a meeting thinking, Everyone is on board. Then two weeks later, nothing has changed.People are still doing things the old way. The same issues keep coming up, and you’re wondering what happened to all that enthusiasm.

Sound familiar?

This happens more often than we realise.

Agreement does not equal action.

People can genuinely agree that something needs to change and still not do anything differently.

Why?

Because action requires two things: Ownership and Clarity.

Why Agreement Isn’t Enough

Agreement can tell you that people understand and support an idea. But action requires something more.

1. Ownership: “Why should I act?”

People are more likely to take ownership when they understand the value of taking action and the cost of continuing as before.

Without that connection, a decision can feel like something the group has agreed on rather than something I need to act on.

2. Clarity: “What exactly do I need to do?”

Even when people want to act, they may not be clear about what happens next.

Who will do what? By when? What does good look like? What support is needed?

When the next step is unclear, people naturally fall back on familiar ways of working.

So how do you create both ownership and clarity?

Start with these three conversations.

3 Ways to Turn Agreement into Action

1. Connect the action to what matters.

Don’t assume people see the value in the same way you do.

Help them understand what will improve if the action is taken and what could happen if nothing changes.

Ask: “Why does this matter, and what is the cost of continuing as we are?”

That conversation can help turn general agreement into personal ownership.

2. Make the next step clear.

“Let’s follow up on this” is not a commitment.

Be specific about who will do what, by when and what support they need.

Clarity reduces the gap between intention and execution.

Before leaving the conversation, make sure everyone knows what happens next and what they are personally responsible for.

3. Keep the conversation going.

One meeting rarely changes an established way of working.

People get busy. Priorities shift. Old habits return.

A short check-in can help identify what’s working, what’s getting in the way and what needs to happen next.

Action becomes more sustainable when people know their commitments will be revisited.

Elevate Your Business Impact

When agreement doesn’t translate into action, projects stall, the same issues resurface and valuable time is spent having the same conversations.

When people understand why the change matters, what they need to do and when they need to do it, ownership becomes clearer and progress becomes easier to sustain.

This is where leadership, influence and transformation come together.

Leadership creates direction. Influence creates commitment. Transformation happens when commitment becomes action.

And you don’t need a leadership title to make that happen.

Whether you’re leading a project, working across teams or advocating for a better way of doing things, your communication can help people move from:

“I agree.” to “I’ll take this forward.”

That shift may seem small.

It is often where meaningful progress begins.

This Month’s Action Focus

Before ending your next meeting, ask:

“What will each of us do differently, and by when?” Listen carefully to the answers.

If the answer is vague, you probably have agreement.

If the answer is clear, owned and time-bound, you’re much closer to action.

A good conversation creates agreement. A purposeful conversation creates movement.
