July 2025 F.I.R.S.T. Newsletter 2 – The Culture You Want Begins With the Conversations You Have
Happy July!
To support you in being F.I.R.S.T. (Future-Ready. Innovative. Relevant. Strategic. Trusted.), here’s 1 tip and 1 quote.

The F.I.R.S.T. Tip
In the previous newsletter, we explored how one honest conversation can shift everything — ease tension, rebuild trust, and even bring peace of mind.
Now let’s take it deeper.
In organisations, culture is shaped less by formal initiatives and more by everyday interactions. How leaders and teams speak, listen, and respond in ordinary moments sends powerful signals about trust, safety, and what truly matters.
While one conversation can spark change, it’s the quality and consistency of our everyday conversations that shape our relationships and the culture we live and work in.
Think about it. At work. At home. The environment we create comes down to how we talk with one another.
Do we feel heard? Do we feel safe to speak up? Are we discussing what really matters or just exchanging updates and ticking boxes?
The healthiest cultures, in families, teams, or organisations, aren’t built by grand gestures. They’re built through small, consistent, intentional moments of dialogue.
So how do we create that kind of culture? Start here:
1. Make Check-Ins a Habit Instead of jumping straight into work or tasks, take 2 minutes to ask: “How are you doing today?” These simple moments create a foundation of trust and connection.
2. Listen to Understand, Not to Reply Too often, we listen to respond…to defend, correct, or prove a point. But true listening means being present and open, even when you disagree. Try this: “Help me understand where you’re coming from.” It shifts the tone instantly from defensiveness to dialogue.
3. Talk About What Matters, Not Just What’s Urgent Yes, the deadlines and deliverables need attention. But so do people.
Try asking: “What’s been on your mind lately?” “What do you need to feel supported?” These questions can open up space for honesty and care.
4. Celebrate Progress, Not Just Results You don’t have to wait for big wins to say something good. Noticing effort, small improvements, or just showing up during a tough week? That’s what reinforces the culture you want. Not the posters. Not the perks. Conversations.
What this really means is that building culture is a daily practice. It lives in our words. Our tone. Our timing. Every conversation either builds connection or breaks it down.
Because culture is shaped through everyday interactions, conversations play a central role in building trust, alignment, and accountability.
